Understanding and Managing the 4 Generations in the Workplace
There is much agreement in business about generational diversity in the new millennium for American workers. First, most business researchers agree that there are 4 very different generations in the workplace: the Veterans, the Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y workers. Second, many business leaders and managers agree that getting these groups to work together effectively is challenging. Finally, many workers agree that the different generations look at each other with confusion and suspicion as they interact together in the workplace. As a result, generations are colliding in the workplace and business professionals are working hard to contain the organizational damage that occurs. Managers and leaders must first understand each of these groups, however, before they can stop generational collisions from occurring in the workplace.
The book, Generations at Work, by authors Zemke, Raines, & Filipczak, provides useful information for understanding each generation and working with them effectively. Each generation is shaped by its year of birth, age, and critical events that occurred in society. These differences give each generation unique work values and work ethics and preferred ways of managing and being managed.
The oldest generation in the workplace is the Veterans. The Veterans were born between 1922 and 1943, and they are also known as the Greatest Generation, Loyalists, and the Traditionalists. Notable members of this generation include Jimmy Carter, Geraldine Ferraro, and Warren Buffett.
Members of the Veteran generation were defined by events such as the Great Depression and World War II. They survived the Great Depression, turned the economy around, and fought and won a World War. As a result, this generation values sacrifice, hard work, conformity to rules, and respect for authority. They are loyal to employers. A critical insight in understanding this generation is their strong belief in paying your dues. From their perspective, rewards, status, respect, and authority must be earned!
To work effectively with Veterans, let them know that you value their experience, spend adequate time in orientation and training activities (including the use of technology), and respect common norms of courteous behavior.
The second oldest generation in the workplace is the Baby Boomers. The Baby Boomers were born between 1943 and 1960. Notable members of this generation include Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and Bill Gates.
Members of the Baby Boomer generation were defined by events such as the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Women’s Liberation’s movement. They challenged the status quo, sought immediate gratification, and set out to fulfill their individual goals. As a result, this generation values personal growth, team involvement, and personal gratification. They are ambitious, highly-educated, and multi-taskers. A critical insight in understanding this generation is that they are loyal to their careers first and to their employers second! Baby Boomers see themselves as the Stars of the Show.
To work effectively with Boomers, show them how they can be an organizational star, provide them with developmental opportunities, and involve them in operational matters.
The third generation in the workplace is Generation X. Generation X was born between 1960 and 1980, and they are also known as the Post-Boomers, Twenty-somethings, Xers, and Slackers. Notable members of this generation include Michael Jordan, Jewel (the singer), and Michael Dell.
Members of Generation X were defined by the Latchkey kids dynamic (took care of themselves at home as their parent(s) worked), MTV, and the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Of all the generations, they came from homes with the highest number of divorced parents. These events have made them independent, self-sufficient, and skeptical. They value diversity, work/life balance, technology, and informality. A critical insight in understanding this generation is that they tend to view all work as just a job. Generation X are the True Contestants of Survivor!
To work effectively with Generation X, partner them with mentors that they respect, do not expect them to “give their life to the job” (instead promote work/life balance), and refrain from giving them too much extended hands-on supervision.
The last generation in the workplace is Generation Y. Generation Y was born between 1980 and 2000, and they are also known as Millenials, Nexters, and the Internet Generation. Notable members of this generation include Leann Rimes, McCauly Culkin, and Chelsea Clinton.
Members of Generation Y were defined by events such as computers and technology, schoolyard violence, TV talk shows, and the girl’s movement. They grew up in a supportive environment where (1) protective parents and other adults attended to their needs, (2) all kids receive rewards regardless of individual effort, and (3) punishment was often time-outs. This has made them confident, sociable, and optimistic. They also do not always understand their limitations. They value civic duty, achievement, sociability, and multi-tasking. They are open-minded, the most accepting of diversity, and unafraid of change. A critical insight in understanding this generation is that they like bosses to coach rather than supervise. Generation Y are optimistic and confident charmers!
To work effectively with Generation Y, partner them with Boomers, provide them with structure, and be generous with training and orientation activities.
Veterans, Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y workers are very different, and this makes for interesting group dynamics. Defined by their age, date of birth, and critical societal events, each generation brings its own strengths and limitations to the workplace. By understanding the strengths, limitations, and values of each generation, managers and leaders can minimize generational collisions. In doing so, managers and leaders will avoid the organizational conflict, employee turnover, and lost productivity that occurs when business professionals are unaware of the differences of the four generations in the workplace.

What to bring for a motorcycle trip in Vietnam
Motorcycle trips demand far more planning than the equivalent journey in a car. Though riding provides an inherent sense of freedom, practical limitations require motorcyclists to think ahead when choosing to hit the open roads
Here are some advises given by Vietnamontrails Adventure Travel, that may help you to organize a wonderful trip in Vietnam.
What you need to bring for a motorcycle, motorbike trip in Vietnam

Most bikes come with toolkits, but you’ll want to make sure you’re equipped with pliers, wire cutters, and various wrenches (including allen wrenches.) A small, all-in-one Leatherman®-style tool can be a handy complement to a traditional toolkit, and is easily accessible for quick repairs or adjustments.
Key Mechanical Spares & Lubes
Bringing along extra fuses, bulbs, spark plugs, and chain oil can make the difference between traveling securely and limping to the next service station.
Flashlight
Ever been caught in the dark? A flashlight will save you the hassle of trying to use your cell phone for illumination.
Tire Repair Kit
Blowouts are an all-too-common occurrence, and a flat kit which includes C02 cartridges for tire inflation will get you on the road again.
Duct Tape
If it’s good enough for astronauts, it should be good enough for you. Unexpected mechanical failures or breaks can sometimes be held together with duct tape, providing a low-tech solution for potentially crippling problems.
First Aid Kit
A first aid kit is something you never want to be without– whether its poison ivy or an ankle burn from an exhaust pipe, the cliché about an ounce of prevention is absolutely true. Rather than assembling your own supplies, an easier and more thorough solution is to purchase a pre-assembled kit, which will ensure that key items are not missing.
Packing.
Packing for a long distance motorcycle ride is a delicate balance between bringing enough items to ensure comfort, and not overloading yourself with unnecessary weight and bulk. After you’ve planned your route, you’ll want to check the weather forecast and get an idea of what to expect in terms the elements.
A good touring suit is an excellent investment, and when choosing your clothes, consider packing several thin layers of clothing, rather than a few thick ones. Flexibility is the key to staying comfortable; it’s far better to have the option to stop and shed or add layers as necessary, than to shiver or sweat your way through what would otherwise be an enjoyable, scenic route.
Be sure to bring energy bars or trail mix and water; if hunger or thirst strikes while you’re far from convenience stores or gas stations, the nourishment will come in handy and keep your riding skills sharp.
When loading up your bike, always put heavier, more solid items on the bottom and sides closer to the bike (to centralize weight.) Lighter items should go on top. If you don’t have saddlebags or tank bags, you should consider using bungee nets to secure loose items. If you must travel with items secured by a bungee net, ensure that they are snug and will not get loosened by winds or g-forces. Again, placing heavier , wider, and more stable items at the bottom will provide an anchor for looser, floppier pieces (like sleeping pads or pillows.)
Finally, equip yourself well. Always wear a full-face helmet for maximum protection– not only against accidents, but also from the elements. Full-face helmets can provide a shield from rain and cold winds, and if constructed with ventilation, can also provide a certain level of comfort in warm weather. It may feel constricting in heat, but the overall benefits of choosing safety over style are vast when considering your long-term health and well being.

If Genesis truly established themselves as progressive rockers on Trespass, Nursery Cryme is where their signature persona was unveiled: true English eccentrics, one part Lewis Carroll and one part Syd Barrett, creating a fanciful world that emphasized the band’s instrumental prowess as much as Peter Gabriel’s theatricality. Which isn’t to say that all of Nursery Cryme works. There are times when the whimsy is overwhelming, just as there are periods when there’s too much instrumental indulgence, yet there’s a charm to this indulgence, since the group is letting itself run wild. Even if they’ve yet to find the furthest reaches of their imagination, part of the charm is hearing them test out its limits, something that does result in genuine masterpieces, as on “The Musical Box” and “The Return of the Giant Hogweed,” two epics that dominate the first side of the album and give it its foundation. If the second side isn’t quite as compelling or quite as structured, it doesn’t quite matter because these are the songs that showed what Genesis could do, and they still stand as pinnacles of what the band could achieve. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
The American version of Genesis’ second double live LP set was originally a mix of three live sides with about 60 minutes of music and a fourth side containing 24 minutes of studio material, most notably the hit “Paperlate” — the British version, however, had four live sides with 92 minutes of music, and that’s been the version on CD since 1994, with the release of this remastered edition. There’s a little over an hour recorded on-stage in Germany in 1981, with Daryl Stuermer and Chester Thompson in the group’s lineup, doing the leaner, more pop-oriented repertory that constituted the group’s sound by the early ’80s, with a fleeting glance at the band’s progressive rock origins in the medley containing “Cinema Show”; added to that are three songs recorded on the group’s 1979 tour, with the lineup featuring Steve Hackett and Bill Bruford on guitar and drums, respectively. The presence of those tracks, totalling 27 minutes of music, spins the song lineup backward a bit in the group’s history, to Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot, with versions of “Fountain of Salmacis” and “It/Watcher of the Skies.” The late-’70s/early-’80s pop/rock sides still dominate but not nearly so overwhelmingly. Of course, it’s only natural for them to wish for the opposite gender of their next child. They don’t want to just leave everything to Mother Nature, since they already did that before. Although it was only recently that baby gender prediction methods started to become popular, they have already been around years before. Because of the power of the internet, information about it can now be easily spread to the public through articles and e-books. It may sound immoral for some, but no artificial means are used when the said methods are performed. They only involve the right timing, the diet that the mothers eat, and an ancient calendar from a country in Asia.
Diet – the food that mothers consume can influence the gender of their baby. Experts say that if couples want to have a Baby Boy, the mother should eat more foods that have alkaline content in them. To conceive a girl, the woman needs to eat more acidic foods. Male sperm thrives in an alkaline environment, while female sperm on an acidic environment. The environment I was referring to is around the vaginal cavity, since it’s the area where sperm are deposited. A woman’s diet has an effect on her vaginal PH balance.
Timing – pregnancy can only happen once a woman ovulates. Ovulation is the process where an egg is released by a woman’s ovaries. This egg is the one that a sperm is going to fertilize to produce a baby. The timing of a couple’s sexual contacts, whether it’s near ovulation or not, can manipulate the gender of their baby. This method came from an observation of the differences between the two types of sperm; the male sperm is short-lived but fast swimmers, while the female sperm is resilient, it can live for days, but they are slow swimmers. To produce a boy, a couple should time their sexual contacts a day before, or the day of ovulation itself. This way, the fast male sperm can out swim the female sperm and reach the egg first. On the other hand, if you want to have a girl, sexual contacts should be scheduled on the sixth, fifth, fourth, until the third day before ovulation. Since female sperm are resilient, they can outlive the male sperm until ovulation occurs. The methods of determining a woman’s ovulation day, are fertility calendars, ovulation test kits, BBT method, and checking of cervical mucus.
Chinese calendar method – this calendar method originated from China, and was used to make more male offspring than female. Chinese people during ancient times preferred male children, because they can help with manual labor. When the said calendar was discovered in a tomb in China, it became a way of predicting the gender of a child, through the matching of the mother’s age to the month of conception. Many people are using the Chinese calendar method, some doctors even suggest it. However, personally, I find the timing method to be more accurate.
